Below are details of DAAT meetings which will be taking place in the coming weeks:

March 2010

The Leicestershire DAAT and Rutland DAAT will be holding their fourth 'Families and Carers Forum' on 23rd March  2010 at 7.00pm.  This is an opportunity for anyone affected by someone else's drug or alcohol use to have their say about local drug and alcohol services, tell us what they think about support services for families and carers, find out about latest developments to local drug and alcohol services and to get involved in the planning of future services.  The Forum will be held at the DAAT office (Unit 1, 1st Floor, 674 Melton Road, Thurmaston, Leicestershire, LE4 8BB).  Please contact Liz Ashby, Service User and Family Involvement Officer,  on 0116 305 2688 for more details and to confirm attendance. Most of these forums are facilitated by DAAT Officers, although some are external forums where the DAAT is represented.

If you would like any details regarding any of the meetings or events listed, please contact the DAAT Team on 0116 3052688 or email liz.ashby@drugs.org.uk

 Conferences and Workshops

Below are details of local, regional and national conferences and workshops, which local stakeholders may have an interest in attending:

Personality Disorder and Forensic Services

Date:       Tuesday 29th June,2010

Venue:    IEE, Austin Court, Birmingham, B1

Details:  The changing patterns in the practice of managing personality disorders have resulted in a number of new initatives, as well as the endorsement of some of the traditional modes of practice.  The complexity and diversity of people presenting to services has resulted in a number of innovative approaches across a spectrum of care.  Some of these are evidenced at the conference.

This conference will explore the work being done by a range of agencies from different settings and sectors.  It will explore some of the therapeutic methods and models that are used to treat these disorders, with the aim to share experiences and best practice solutions to aid the therapeutic process.

The day will look at current trends and initiatives and will also contain a practice component.

Mental Health & Substance Misuse
(Making integrated care in the criminal justice system a reality)

Date:       Tuesday 25th May,2010

Venue:    ORT House Conference Centre, London

Details:  Government guidance on supporting people with co-occurring substance misuse and mental health problems was published in 2002.  Yet many people in this group find themselves being batted between substance misuse and mental health services or receive no service at all.  Too many end up living impoverished lives, excluded from their communities, denied an ordinary life and frequently in trouble with the law.  People with dual diagnosis tend to have multiple and complex problems.  They do not fit into the neat silos constructed by public services.  Instead they need integrated support from a variety of providers in order for care to be effective.  This conference aims to address the issues of complexity and looks at both developing policy and practice to achieve real integrated services.

Nutrition and Addiction
(Promoting recovery through nutritional and lifestyle interventions)

Date:      Wednesday 5th May,2010

Venue:    ORT House Conference Centre, London

Details:  Drug and alcohol-related deaths have tripled in the last three decades, while substance misuse in the workplace remains a significant cause of accidents, lowered productivity and absenteeism.  Addiction treatment centres in the UK combine medication, counselling and behaviour modification to tackle cravings and aid recovery.  Relapse rates, however, remain alarmingly high.  Many addiction centres lack a nutritional component in their treatment approaches.  This conference examines the importance of nutrition in prevention, and the potential underlying nutritional and biochemical factors involved in addictive behaviour.

CHT Annual Conference :- Psychosis and Substance Misuse

Date:     Friday 5th March, 2010

Time:     9:30am - 5:00pm

Venue:   Royal Society of Medicine, London

Details:  The high prevalence of alcohol and drug misuse in those with psychiatric illness is apparent to all who work within adult psychiatry. Street drugs can trigger the onset of psychosis. Traditionally, mental health and addiction services have operated in parallel. Differences between the two services in terms of organisation, geographical location and philosophy of care have often meant that patients have fallen between the two, leading to frustration for patients, families and staff.  The past 10 years have seen increased understanding of the reasons for this comorbidity, the development of innovative integrated treatment services and the introduction of new treatments for substance misuse.  This conference explores current thinking in this important area of work.

Be Careful What You Wish For: Families, Drugs & Alcohol: Involvement or Support?

Date:     Tuesday 23rd March, 2010

Time:     9:30am - 4:15pm

Venue:   ORT House Conference Centre, London

Details:  Since it was established in 1984, Adfam has worked to support families affected by substance misuse.  Over the past year, it has been evolving into an umbrella organisation, committed to representing the views of its supporters to policy makers and opinion shapers.  As part of this development, Adfam has consulted with professionals and volunteers across a wide range of sectors to gather information about the issues which are crucial to the future of family support.  These issues inform Adfam's manifesto, and reveal the challenges and debates for anyone who works with families where substance misuse is a matter of concern.
